The Leadership Imperative Principles and Practices

Month 1 – Self-Mastery: Growing Up

Self-Mastery is the result of a steadfast commitment to self-awareness and personal and professional transformation. It starts with cultivating deep curiosity and a learning mindset. Self-Mastery requires that we take ourselves off ‘automatic’ to build our capacity to self-observe and self-reflect. It is about evolving our mental models as we begin to see and shift our unconscious and reactive habits of thinking, feeling and acting. As our self-awareness grows, so does our ability to transform and achieve ever-higher levels of Self-Mastery.

Month 2 – Conscious Presence: Waking Up

While Self-Mastery is about growing up through the different stages of adult development, Conscious Presence is about waking up and embodying a higher state of ‘Being’. At its essence, it is mindfulness in action. It is the practice of being at peace with and empowered by the present moment. We shift the inner place we come from and awaken to a heightened state of consciousness that is separate from our thoughts or ego. This process involves the practices of non-judgement, non-attachment and non-resistance, leading to more resilience, receptivity and equanimity.

Month 3 – Purposeful Achievement

Purposeful Achievement aligns us with our calling and grounds our actions in a broader context and deeper meaning. It reminds us not to seek achievement for achievement’s sake. Rather, we have an obligation to use our unique talents to serve humanity. Purposeful and visionary leaders are passionately committed to actualizing their unique purpose in this world. They inspire a shared and compelling vision while supporting others in discovering their own.

Month 4 – Engaging in Conscious Relationship

Building on Otto Scharmers’ ego-system to eco-system work, Engaging in Conscious Relationship calls us to be in caring connection and purposeful partnership with others. It is based on evidence that the best leaders actively cultivate deep relationships. It provides a roadmap for building relationships where we genuinely see and value others. We learn to be curious about and truly listen to others. We also become more inclusive and skilled at enabling and empowering others and building strong teams.

Month 5 – Courageous Authenticity

How often do we avoid speaking our truth or raising an issue because we believe there is too much at risk? Probably too many times to count. And yet each time we fail to do so, we deplete our energy and rob ourselves and others of the opportunity to address the elephant in the room. Courageous Authenticity is about being brave and vulnerable, taking tough stands and bringing up the ‘undiscussable’. It is about honestly and straightforwardly dealing with risky and uncomfortable issues with the people directly involved.  

Month 6 – Radical Responsibility and Accountability

This leadership principle is about fully owning our reality and taking 100% responsibility and accountability for our experience in life and at work. It calls on us to leave behind our tendency to blame others and see ourselves as victims. Rather it invites us to be fully accountable for what we sign up to deliver. It speaks to the importance of clear agreements and of building trusting relationships by taking Radical Responsibility and Accountability for all that we are aware of and responsible for.

Month 7 – Co-Creating What Matters Most

The era of the heroic leader is over. Collective leadership is the new, adaptive game in town. It is perfectly suited to the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) times we live and lead in. Co-creating What Matters Most entails the practices of deep collaboration, collective responsibility and unwavering commitment to building capacity and capabilities in others. It is about co-sensing and co-creating what wants and needs to emerge in service of building a thriving future for all.

Gilles Brouillette, Ph.D.

Gilles is a founding partner and the President of the Transformational Learning Institute. He has a Doctorate in Transpersonal Psychology. He is the Co-director of the Conscious Leadership Program at the Professional Development Institute of the University of Ottawa. He is also a Senior Leadership Consultant and Executive Coach for The Leadership Circle.
